Termites

Termites are an ancient order of insects whose origins date back more than 100 million years to the Cretaceous period. Although they are commonly called ‘white ants’, the resemblance to ants is superficial and they are more closely related to cockroaches and in fact have been recently included into the cockroach order Blattodea. Correct identification of the different species of termites requires considerable skill and experience to determine correct and efficient solutions.

Termites are the biggest threat to any structure containing wood and could potentially be exposed to a possible termite infestation whether in the business heart of city, in the suburbs or out in the country, unless protective measures are taken. Just because you may be living in a brick or stonehouse does not mean that it’s impervious to termites. Termites are known to damage any materials they cannot digest and this has been known to be anything from plastics rubber, metal and mortar. Termites are able to naturally adapt and colonise anywhere they can, no matter how inhospitable the place is. In an “impervious” building, you won’t avoid the termites – you will just have a harder time noticing the termite infestation that has happened, at least until the damage has already been done. Once you notice the infestation in your building, it might already be far too late.

The best way to prevent expensive damage to your building form an infestation is to invest some funds in termite protection right now! Instead of waiting for the termites to come and destroy your home or business, it is wiser to consider a proactive role. By taking action right now and making your building truly inhospitable for termites, you will get some real protection and peace of mind.

Queensland is regarded as having a high hazard area for all termite species. This includes the subterranean termite infestation, species which damage timber-in-service occurs throughout mainland Australia. Subterranean termites are generally ground-dwelling or require contact with the soil or some constant source of moisture and are the main threat posed to timber in the built environment (timber-in-service).

Damp-wood termites generally live in damp rotting logs or rot pockets in dead or living trees. Dry-wood termites obtain water from the wood in which they live and have no contact with the soil, or with any other source of moisture. Termite excavations that alter the structure of trees commonly harbour areas for further pests and wildlife to inhabit. Termite protection is paramount for the new homeowner. Termites are very serious problem because they cause damage both in and around your home. Termite Barriers for Pre-construction

Before you build your new home or consider renovating an existing building, be aware that termite barriers must be installed as per the Australian Standards 3660.1  The purpose of the termite barrier is to deter concealed entry by termites into buildings. Termites can build around barriers but their workings or evidence thereof is then in the open, where they may be detected more readily during regular inspections.
